So why would use a tax agent rather than just lodging your tax return via MyGov or MyTax? Why use our firm over another firm – possibly even a cheaper firm?

- Well I do know the tax law well, not just the law but how the tax office interprets and enforces the law which is probably even more important than the law itself. You may think that every Accountant can say the same thing but actually you would be suprised how many made up “laws” I have heard of…
- I Alan the practice owner am your Accountant, I lodge your return and I know what is on it, if something goes wrong or the tax office has a question about your return in a year or in 5 years I will still be here to help you. This is not the same in many firms where you may see a different junior accountant every year or two.
- In my last practice we lodged 12,000-14,000 tax returns per year. That is a lot of experience.
- When you lodge your own return or a more poorly skilled Accountant does your work you could miss hundreds perhaps thousands or even tens of thousands in tax deductions. The more complex your returns are the harder they are to get right.
- I will give you right information – things like “you can claim xxx”, I always encourage you to claim absolutely everything you can within the law. I will not make up numbers to put on your return or encourage you to make up numbers to put on your tax return. This is illegal and while it can save you tax on day one later on when the tax office find your creativity it will cost you a lot of money.
- If you are a business owner I will teach you about tax, things like how much tax to set aside each week or month, when to register a company, when to start paying yourself a wage. If you like I can even teach you things like managing and forecasting cashflow, sales, marketing and a bunch of other exciting stuff (exciting to me anyway)
